Article: Facing the Screen Dilemma

The Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood is a non-profit organization whose mission is to support parents’ efforts to raise healthy families by limiting commercial access to children and ending the exploitative practice of child-targeted marketing.  In working for the rights of children to grow up—and the freedom of parents to raise them—without being undermined by corporate interests, CCFC promotes a more democratic and sustainable world.

Screens of all designs now make up the reality of even the youngest child. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no screen time for children under 2 and only 2 hours a day for children who are older. What are families and early childhood programs to do when considering the merit of an avalanche of new media available to and targeted to children?

Facing the Screen Dilemma is a resource for early childhood educators, as well as families, to make more informed decisions about how young children are interacting with media.
